PROJECT DESCRIPTION

"For this project, we will begin the first step in the final assignment(s) of creating a Publication (cover + layouts) andadditional collateral.

[Each] student will identify a topic of their choice that they would like to work with for the remainder of the quarter. Your topic is up to you - it can be philosophical, educational, political, or can surround a hobby/passion of your choice. Your topic can be broad or very narrow. Some topic examples include: Dreaming, Cooking, Running, Skateboarding, Music, Deforestation, Wellness/Healthcare, Museums, Voting Rights, Space, etc. The sky is the limit.

I suggest choosing something you are passionate about! This is a chance to design for something you want to design for. Start thinking about how you can take a different lens to the content in which your topic focuses. "

Topic

This publication will focus on speculative designs. It will cover the ideas and concepts of speculative design as a design theory as well as provide some sample works from past and current speculative designers.Speculative designs are interesting to me because they are often inspired by the future and how as designers, we can shape that future. The practice of speculative design is open-ended and creative. I think that the design fictions that surface through speculative designs can be inspiring for all creatives; therefore, a publication that showcases a collection of speculative designs might be a source of inspiration for many designers. Personally, when I see speculative designs I feel moved to think outside the box – ideating without the current set of design constraints we face in our society today. The hope that we can shape our world through speculative designs that focus on human values and a brighter future makes me hopeful of futures that might even seem impossible.

Audience

The audience of my publication will be designers. This topic is quite niche, even to designers because it is a specific framework for how designers conduct their design thinking and it is a unique field of design. However, this publication can be read by all designers and design laymen. As mentioned in the “Topic” section, there will be a brief discussion about the current literature about the concept of speculative design.

Unique Lens

This publication will be unique in that it will be a collection of speculative designs. The unique lens that I will take with this topic is that I believe speculative designs can be an inspiration to the designing of everyday things. Designers might want to view my publication because it might inspire them in their day to day designing. A compilation of speculative designs might somehow

inspire, energize or motivate designers to think outside the box of present technology designs and into the space of our preferred human and world future.
